Long Island Holiday Photos/What to Wear for your Holiday Photos

Fall is officially here.  The kids are back in school, football season has begun, Dunkin Donuts is promoting their pumpkin spiced lattes, the leaves are turning  and it’s that time when everyone is starting to think about getting professional holiday photos taken.  I know, I know…..it’s only October and Halloween hasn’t even gotten here but the truth is the sooner you plan to get your holiday photos taken the better, particularly if you wish to capture the fall foliage.  Although it is hard to predict just exactly when the fall foliage begins and how long it will last,  you really only have an average of about four weeks to capture  the foliage, sometimes more, sometimes less.  Usually there are about two weeks in which  you see the richest and most vibrant colors.  Typically here in Long Island, NY and in the five boroughs of NYC, the peak is usually around the last week in October and the first week of November so if you are considering having your photos taken with the fall foliage  I strongly recommend that you do this no later than the middle of November.  Look on the bright side you will have your photos and holiday cards all ready before Thanksgiving and will have one less thing to worry about during the holidays.  :o)

Deciding what to wear in your holiday photos can be a daunting task.  I always gets asked what colors to wear.   Should we match?  Should we color coordinate?  I have some suggestions and at the bottom of the post I will post a few links to help you decide on what to wear for your family/child holiday photos.  The key obviously is going to be what type of background will you be using?  Will you have them taken indoors at your home or in a  studio or at an outdoor location?  Will this be a family shoot or just of the kiddos?  I think having the whole family in the pictures is always a great idea and I generally prefer doing family photos outdoors as it provides a variety of backgrounds.  You can also have them taken in your home, especially if your home is beautifully decorated for the holidays.  If you plan on taking your photos in a studio or against a studio backdrop then I would  speak with the photographer to find out what type of backdrops and props they will be using.

Here are a few suggestions of what works and what doesn’t:

1.  Stay away from White

White generally washes people out, particularly if you have fair skin and just looks “blah”.  You can however using white as an accent color, or layer over the white. i.e.. a jacket, sweater or colorful scarf.

2.  Consider wearing layers and accessories

Layers and accessories can add a lot of spark to your photos and texture.  Some ideas include a sweater, jacket, coat, vest, button up shirt, tights, hats, scarves, gloves and even necklaces.  Layers are great for adding a pop of color and texture in addition to helping you keep warm or cool during the duration of your photo session.

3.  Stay away from Prints, Logos , Graphics, Characters and Stripes

Just a no-no.  They just take too much attention away from the main subject(s)….your child.  Who wants people to first notice the Mickey Mouse before that adorable little smile?  And if you do insist on wearing the red sweater with Frosty on it….. then fine….but do layer it over another shirt below it so that you can pull it off after you take a couple of photos of your child wearing it.

4.  Coordinate your outfits, but don’t match

This applies to a family of  two or more.  Please don’t make everyone wear the same color.  Matching is boring and dated.  Coordinating does not translate to matching.  You can choose a favorite color or style and go from there.  The idea is to harmonize the colors so they are complimentary to one another.  Next time you are at the mall or out window shopping, notice how the windows and mannequins are made up.  Most of the time they are showing you several different outfits in different tones (earth tones or cool tones).  A good way  to see if  your outfits are coordinated is to lay them all out on the floor and take a picture of it so that you can look at it from afar and get a different perspective of it.

5.  Ideas for Choosing Colors

Earth tones (beige, brown, tan, gold, grey, forest green or mustard)  will always look great in photos taken outdoors, but do allow for a hint of color (reds, blues, greens, purples or teal) by either wearing a colorful hat, scarf, gloves or top to go with your neutral bottom to add a little pop to your pictures.  These colors mentioned always look stunning outdoors.

NYC Yoga Photography/Yoga in the Park

Yoga photography taken outdoors, particularly in a setting such as a park brings it all together in such a beautiful way that is not possible from inside the walls of a studio.  Outdoor locations just provide for a better impression than a studio will.  There are many locations where a yogi can practice their yoga and capture stunning images.  Neighborhood parks, beaches, the wilderness, gardens, lakes, mountains and even rooftops and urban settings are just some locations that provide for exquisite backdrops, scenery, landscapes, geometry and composition to help create compelling yoga photos.   I love the outdoors and I love photographing people so I am always looking for opportunities to photograph people doing fun and interesting things outdoors.  I got this opportunity with a recent client friend of mine.  She is a nutritionist and was looking for some new environmental portraits and headshots for her new website.  She knew that she wanted to do something outdoors that incorporated nature and after tossing ideas around for her session we decided to incorporate some yoga photos into her session.  You can read more about her headshot/e-portrait session here.

Yoga photography shoots are great for teachers who need marketing material for their websites and flyers, as well as for yogis who are looking to capture some cool shots of themselves for their social media accounts and/or for large format art for their home.  Not an advanced yogi that can put both feet behind your head or hold a handstand?  No problem.  You need not be a contortionist to get great photos.  Sure, photos of crazy flexibility poses are cool to see, but photos of the most basic poses are just as beautiful.  Poses such as Warrior A or Warrior B or peaceful poses such as tree pose are all that you need to do.  When these basic poses are placed in beautiful settings and geometrically aligned,  the emphasis is not on the difficulty of the pose but on the overall composition and scenery of the photo.

From small business owners to corporate executives, singles to stay-at-home mom’s, more and more clients are requesting a non-traditional headshot session sometimes referred to as the “E- portrait session” or “environmental portrait session”.  What is an E-portrait session?  It is a variety of individual portraits and/or non-traditional headshots for you to use, primarily online either for your business or personal websites, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and sometimes online dating sites.  In today’s digital world, it just makes sense to have professional, clean, classy photos that represent who you are.

Recently, I did this type of shoot for Diana.  Diana is a registered dietician/nutritionist wellness coach and yoga instructor in NYC working with people to help them live more healthier lifestyles.  She currently has her own facebook page which has plenty of nutrition wellness ideas and tips on how to stay healthy but is looking to create her own website soon.

She contacted me because she was looking for a variety of great photos: professional shots for her website,  Facebook and Linkedin pages and a few environment specific shots.  In our consultation we tossed around a few ideas until Diana decided that she wanted to  capture some casual  headshots at one of her favorite coffee shops in Astoria, NY and then some at Astoria Park in Queens, NY.    Knowing that Diana loved doing Yoga and was an instructor, I suggested that she bring a change of outfit so that we could capture some yoga poses.

If you are interested in this type of shoot and would like some non-traditional headshots for your business, website, online dating or social media web sites, just contact me!  I would love to hear from you! info@irenebellaphotography.com

I service NYC, Long Island and some parts of New York and New Jersey.  We can either meet at agreed outdoor/indoor location such as a park, library, museum, your office, etc.

Long Island Actor Headshots

Long Island Actor Headshots

If you are a Long Island actor, having a great headshot  is a must since it is your calling card to get work.  I love shooting headshots.  I enjoy directing and coaching my subjects and working with them to create the best images possible.  I enjoy meeting people and hearing about how they got into acting and I enjoy the challenge of getting the “look”.  Nailing a great headshot is hard work.  It certainly is not easy and can require many clicks of the shutter before we get the right look.  Here are some recent headshots that I took for an aspiring young  Long Island, NY actor.  Headshots are NOT just for actors anymore.  With social media and on-line presence playing such a huge factor in our lives, everyone needs a good headshot for their on-line and social media profiles.  Isn’t it time that you book your shoot today?

Long Island Sweet 16/Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage

Long Island Sweet 16/Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage

I wanted to share this collection of images from Kiera’s  Sweet 16 at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage, Long Island that took place earlier this summer.  Kiera is a beautiful girl and the dress that she wore was an absolute stunner.  She truly looked like a model.  It was a beautiful day most of the day so we were fortunate enough to take some portraits outdoors on the beautiful grounds of Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage State Park.   Just as we began, some dark, threatening clouds came rolling in.   And then a few drops came down and all the girls ran back inside before the rain came pouring down.    We finished up with a few more shots indoors before the party started.  It was a great party.  The DJ’s  kept the party going on the dance floor as Kiera and her friends danced the night away  and everyone had a great time.

It was an honor and pleasure to photograph Kiera’s Sweet 16 at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage.    Congratulations again to Kiera on her Sweet 16!
